Cafe dining al fresco in Deal!

Poppy’s Kitchen is buzzing! The sun is shining in Kent and it’s all about dining al fresco in our garden.  The full cafe menu for breakfast and lunch is available in the garden and there’s plenty of space for dogs and children alike.

It’s only be four months since we opened the doors and I’m just catching my breath, but what an experience so far. I’ve lost count of how many eggs I’ve fried, how many chickens I’ve poached and how many balls of shortcrust pastry I’ve rolled out (an increasingly mean feat in this hot weather).

The menu is ever evolving, as the seasons change so do our ingredients and our salads are the perfect example of this. The celeriac slaw has been replaced by a fresher carrot and beetroot raw salad and root vegetables have given way to broad beans, courgette and cucumbers.

The shop is a riot of colour with stone fruits of all varieties – British cherries and rhubarb, Kentish strawberries and raspberries and just a few Spanish imposters in the form of nectarines, peaches and apricots.

The abundance in the shop allows for more creativity in the kitchen, leading to new specials such as our new potato, Wingham Well watercress, soft boiled egg and black olive salad and hearty chicken, chorizo and marrowfat pea stew.

The heatwave has not put a dent in demand for our cooked house breakfasts which are served right up to 3pm each day.  Every day we cook The Black Pig’s Cumberland sausages and smoked back bacon to order along with Walmestone Growers’ famous cherry tomatoes and our homemade baked beans with chipotle.

I hope to see you sunning yourself in our garden with a chilled glass of Chapel Down Rose or a cup of coffee soon, come and say hello to Poppy in the kitchen!
